How to ask her out officially (need to do it fast?) Any advice welcome.?

Good Question, Bad Plan. Don't do it on FB - That'll just make you look bad in a girls eye: "He can't tell me he likes me in person but wants to go out with me...joke?" Do it in person. She'll see that you like her and strong enough to tell her in person: it won't go unnoticed. Oh, and when you tell her you do, if you try that "I know times are rough..." thing, then you won't come of as interested in her, you'll be her bestfriend she can call to cry and complain to who'll make her feel some-what better -__- You don't want that. So instead of wondering if you two can hang out sometime tell her that your going out somewhere fun and want her to join, it would keep her mind off her problem and well, who doesn't like to have fun? Make sure your actually having fun so she'll be more open! On the "date" flirt with her; show your interested. You've knew her for along time so get comfortable touching each other. Like poke her to tease her and if its going well enough play fight with her (if she doesn't mind). At the end of the date tell her what you think not how you feel. Telling her how you feel would put too much pressure on her and other stuff that can turn her off. What you think as in about her, what you like about her (something different, not typical) and hint at your both single and have something. If you know everything can't go any better then ask her out as your girlfriend! Maybe you can bring up her ex and the bad things he done to her. Tell her she doesn't deserve that and you want to make her happy ;) (Tell her you'll be calling her girlfriend from now on).
